They say you marry a person and not a family, but tell that to a Larson bride.

A year has passed since his ex-wife remarried. Now Will Larson's adult sons have decided he needs their help to start dating again. His growing desperation to date retiring high school art teacher, Jessica Daniels, makes Will think suffering their help might be worth it. The skilled sculptor carves masterpieces from stone but soon discovers that he has a lot left to learn about the art of love.

Even though his sons tease him about not dating, and his ex-wife thinks he is still hung up on her, 53 yr old retired principal and stone sculptor, William Everett Larson, is glad he waited to date until he found 47 yr old high school art teacher, Jessica Daniels. He admires Jessica for her courageous art and for how she has dealt with the trauma of her life. While dating him works for her, Jessica assures Will she is incapable of lasting love, but he refuses to believe it’s true. Will is sure the only part of Jessica truly damaged by her past is her heart.

I mostly liked the story, but there were some things I had problems with.

Spoilers
The H supposedly loved the h, but still allowed his ex to feel him up. Guess what? It doesn’t have to be sex to be cheating. I read an article recently that said a high percentage of people cheated with their exes, but this is fiction and fiction heroes are supposed to be better than everyday people. If I wanted to read about real life idiocies I’d just go online. A hero doesn’t let his ex grope him, especially long enough to get a reaction. If he’s cheating he’s not a hero.

Another thing I have an issue with is what seems to be a common trend with a lot of romance writers. They think it’s a great plot line to have someone lie, and then create conflict when they’re found out. Some of the best books I’ve read haven’t used this stale devise for drama, and I really wish authors would put that much effort into their writing.

I have to say how the H’s son M treats women is horrendous. He’s way too selfish and unconcerned towards all of them, but especially towards the girl that he caused huge amounts of trauma to when they were younger. He doesn’t feel a need to apologize, and can't understand why what he did was so wrong. He instead excuses it by saying he was just a stupid drunk kid, and thinks she should just get over it. Oh! And while he’s supposedly been “waiting” for her he’s been going through and discarding all other women like Kleenex. Jerk. I think I might have rated this book higher if that son’s behavior hadn’t been included in it.

Carved In Stone A Novel Art of Love Book 1 edition by Donna McDonald Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

This is the first book in the Art of Love series, so, naturally, there are artists in here.

Will is a 50-year old bachelor, a father of two adult sons, and a sculptor of penis statues. Actually, they’re more like self-portraits. Jessica is a 46-year old art teacher that hasn’t worked on her art in years. When the two meet, it was a sizzling chemistry and the sexual innuendos begin instantly.

Readers feel for Jessica once you know the full meaning of her risqué sculptures. Still, I didn’t see how she could be a shameless flirt considering. Perhaps her art signified her own sexual exploration. But, then, what was Will’s excuse? Loneliness perhaps? Or was he compensating for what he lost in his most recent divorce? Well, the good thing about art is that it’s open to all sorts of interpretation.

The attraction is palpable between the two, but how could Will believe that this is “it” for him? Wasn’t too soon, especially since he just got divorced? I liked the conflict that the ex-wife played between the new couple.

And, although the story centered more on Will and Jessica, Michael (Will’s son) also had a romantic downfall with his one-night stand getting pregnant. Of course, he doesn’t think it’s so disastrous considering he’s in love with her. Another fool who thinks he’s in love. But, since Carrie can’t stand the sight of him for hurting her so many years ago, that just provokes him to offer her a business deal Marry him until the baby is born and, if she chooses to leave, she can do so. Of course, his secret plan was to convince her to stay married to him. Interesting, huh? Obviously, this is a story that continues in Book 2.

There were a few typos here and there, and I didn’t quite get the nude art. Still, the characters were fun and endearing, and the story flowed nicely. It was a quick, simple romance.
Being an artist, I had to read this book. And I really liked the fact that the characters were an older couple. Will is working through his feelings about his divorce and his boys are encouraging him to get back on the horse and at least date. Their man speak is really amusing.
Jessica is an artist who works through an earlier experience through her art.
The two are made for each other, but Will has to learn how to woo her into his bed and keep her there.
Jessica is more determined to remain single and a free spirit.
I found that conflict laced with the more serious issues a driving force in this book and really enjoyed reading it.
I'm definitely going to get the other books in the series.
